Know Your Value

What do you consider most valuable in your life? Your spouse, your kids, your pets, your possessions, your grandmother’s ring, your health, your dad's old car, etc...
If we value something, then we can naturally assume that it brings us some sort of joy or happiness. We may even hold it in great esteem, consider it irreplaceable, or even hold it in high regard. We wouldn’t want to consider parting with it and surely wouldn’t want to lose it.
I was driving into town the other day and I drove by a house where an elderly couple once lived. I’m not sure if they had recently passed away or were going to live in a nursing home or what. I noticed that someone was moving and clearing out all their belongings. It made me stop and think about my life and all the things I have accumulated over the years. What will happen to all my “stuff” when I pass from this earth? A person spends a lifetime gathering, saving and caring for items that will one day be sold in an estate sale, donated to charity or simply thrown away. Are we holding on to the things in this life that have real value? The things that will bring us genuine joy and peace. What if we valued God and His promise of an eternal home more than we valued a luxury home? What if we valued our relationship with Jesus Christ more than we valued time scrolling on our phone?
Hear me when I say that there is value in the relationships we build with our spouse, kids, family and friends but our relationship with God must come first. How can we point our family to God if we don’t first know him ourselves. I heard this statement once in a sermon and I will never forget it. The preacher said, “your soul will never cease to exist”. Think about that for a minute. Your soul will live forever and if I read my Bible correctly then there are only two places my soul could reside after death, either heaven or hell!
So how much time are we spending, striving and worrying about buying or getting the next big thing? How much of our time is spent reading Gods word, praying and reaching out to those who are lost and in need? God knows your real value, do you?
Matthew 6:19 Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
